Southampton’s B team return to Premier League 2 action this week, visiting Derby County on Friday evening.

Derby County vs Saints

Premier League 2

Loughborough University Stadium

Friday 9th September, 7pm BST

It’s been nine days since Dave Horseman’s side have been in action and 13 days since they last took to the field in Premier League 2.

That last outing came in the Papa John’s Trophy, where they went up against an experienced Forest Green Rovers side.

Olly Lancashire gave Saints the lead just past the half hour mark, but the lead only lasted five minutes as Baily Cargill, Olly Casey and Dom Bernard flipped the game on its head.

Derby were last in action in Premier League 2 back on Friday 26th August, suffering a heavy defeat away to Newcastle United.

You have to go back to the 2020/21 season for the last meeting between Saints and Derby in competitive action.

Kazeem Olaigbe’s solo goal soon after the second-half restart was enough for three points at Snows Stadium in a tight back in February 2021.

The reverse fixture was a feisty affair, when two Saints players were sent off and five players in total were booked as Derby came away with a 3-1 victory.

MANAGER’S NOTES

“After defeat last week in the cup it’s time to refocus on the league,” said Horseman.

“We’ve got another tough game at Derby, who gave us a good few tests last time we played them.

“We’ve had a good few days training so it’ll be good to get back to action and put our work into practise.”
