Saints got off to the perfect start in Premier League 2 on matchday one, overcoming a tough test in Nottingham Forest.

After a goalless opening 45 at Meadow Lane the second period started with a bang. Dom Ballard opening the scoring on 46 minutes, before Alex Mighten levelled just a minute later.

Skip forward two minutes and Ballard had put Saints ahead once more, before Jack Turner wrapped up the points a further two minutes after that.

The Baggies also started their season with a win and did so in dramatic fashion. Opponents Newcastle looked to have snatched a win at the West Brom training ground, before a Reyes Cleary double in the 89th and 91st minutes turned the game on its head.

LAST MEETING

West Brom and Saints are certainly no strangers, having faced four times across two competitions last season.

The last meeting came at the start of February, where a Luke Pearce stunner claimed all three points for Dave Horseman’s side at New Bucks Head.

Saints won two, drew one and lost only the opener of the four meetings last campaign, scoring six goals.

MANAGER’S NOTES

“We’re feeling really good,” said Horseman post victory at Forest. “West Brom were strong last year and won their first game of this, so they’re obviously a good team again.

“We’ve had a brilliant week, we played on Monday, played the first team on Wednesday to help them prepare for Leeds, then another 90 minutes. That’s three of them this week.

“It’s a great challenge and that’s what it like to be a footballer. I have no doubt they’ll step up to the challenge.

“West Brom are physical, well organised and their coach is an excellent coach. But if we do what we do I think we’ll get a really positive response from the group."
