Sunday 1st May, 2pm BST

After 23 days away from action, Saints B returned with a bang on Monday at St James’s Park.

16-year-old Tyler Dibling notched a first-half hat-trick in emphatic style, scoring all three of his goals inside 40 minutes, before Jimmy-Jay Morgan added a cultured fourth just past the hour mark.

Newcastle threatened a comeback inside the last ten minutes, but Dave Horseman’s side came away with a well-deserved 4-2 win.

Sunderland were also in action on Tyneside at the start of the week, beating Birmingham 2-1 thanks to an Ellis Taylor double.

On the final matchday of the season a win for Saints could see them finish as high as sixth on goal difference, which would secure them a play-off spot.

LAST MEETING

Saints faced a trip to Sunderland at the back end of November earlier this season.

After Taylor had given the Black Cats the lead, Horseman’s side turned the game on its head thanks to goals from Dom Ballard and Dynel Simeu either side of the break.

Saints looked set for three points going into the last 20 minutes, before strikes from Tyrese Dyce and Stephen Wearne provided another twist on a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.

“When we played them away I thought we played really well but we didn’t manage the game,” reflected Horseman.

“It’s probably games like that meant we’re going to miss out on the play-offs this year.

“They’ve got one or two really good strikers, were quite direct in their style and have had a few decent results lately.

“It’ll be a tough game but we’ve had a few of them recently. We’ll approach it in the right manner and hopefully put on a show like we did at Newcastle.”
