After a year of learning curves for the most part in 2021, the upturn in form towards the end of the calendar year will gave Dave Horseman and his side cause for optimism going into 2022.

Their first test comes against a Wolves side who sit just a place above Saints in eighth, their last PL2 outing a close run 4-2 defeat at runaway league leaders Fulham in early December.

Saints were last in league action at the end of the month, travelling to an experienced Norwich side who claimed a narrow 4-3 win despite a late fightback from the visitors.

Goals from Kazeem Olaigbe, Dom Ballard and Jem Hewlett took the game to the wire, but the Canaries claimed all three points.

LAST MEETING

The previous meeting between these two sides will be fondly remembered by those in the Saints camp as Horseman and his side claimed their first win of the season.

In mid-October Saints travelled to Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground looking to build on their point at home to Stoke City last-time-out.

Olaigbe's 6th minute penalty set them on their way, before a resolute performance helped cement the three points with a 1-0 victory.

Saints would go on to win five of their next six games in all competitions.

MANAGER'S NOTES

"The second half of the season will be very much a transitional period for the B team," said Horseman, "some players will head out on loan and we will integrate even more young players from the Under-18s group.

"It's always exciting seeing how these younger ones cope with the step up. Our last game against Norwich was maybe a taste of what the Wolves team will look like.

"They are a very technical team who were very good in the build up when we last played them - it will be a tough game but one we are looking forward to."
