Southampton Football Club is pleased to announce that exciting young forward Luke Pearce has signed his first professional contract.

The 17-year-old striker joined Saints last season on a scholarship from League Two side Walsall’s youth set-up.

During his first season at the club Pearce featured 18 times for the Academy, including a goal on his first start for Dave Horseman’s B team at home to Liverpool in Premier League 2.

His performances during his debut campaign have led to a first professional deal this summer, something Pearce claims is a big moment for him and his family.

“It’s an honour at such a big club to sign my first professional contract,” said the youngster, “This is what I’ve been working for, to get to this point, but this is just the start for me.

“I’ve only been here a season but I feel I’ve definitely progressed a lot. Going forward I see myself developing even more and becoming an all-rounded player.

“I’m excited to see what this contract will bring and how far I can go beyond that too. Southampton is known for breeding young players, that’s obviously an inspiration for me to follow suit.

“Next season I want to make sure I’m performing with the Under-18s firstly, then progress into the B team and hopefully the first team."

Academy Director Matt Hale was thrilled to see Pearce continue his development with the club, stating: “Luke has integrated himself really well into the Southampton Way.

"Both in terms of playing and our culture since joining from Walsall twelve months ago. His work ethic is extremely high and he leads the line very well.

"This will stand him in a strong position to progress with us, as his energy and enthusiasm aligns very well to our playing philosophy.”
