Goalkeeper Fraser Forster proved a crucial component during Southampton's win over Crystal Palace on Tuesday night, thanks in part to his penalty save in the 41st minute.

Luka Milivojevic was the man looking to add to Christian Benteke’s second minute opener and put the visitors ahead once more, cancelling out Danny Ings’ 19th minute equaliser.

But equal to it was Forster, who added that save to a string of impressive stops he had already made already in an entertaining first 45.

This gave Saints the platform they needed to build on in the second half, where first Ché Adams sneaks in at the back post before Ings grabbed his second of the evening with 15 minutes to go.

“I think [the penalty save] was at an important time,” said a modest Forster. “We’ve conceded a few penalties this season and most have gone in but it was nice to make the save.

It was a huge reaction and a great team performance.

“If we go 2-1 down it’s a different game and uphill battle but thankfully after that we kept going and reacted, especially in the second half where we really went to a different level and got two fantastic goals.

“We took our chances when they came and there were some fantastic finishes. It’s great to see the ball go into the back of the net.

“Obviously it’s been tough lately, been tough really since Christmas, but hopefully the fans are buzzing with that.

“It’s a massive win. Conceding so early was obviously disappointing, but we reacted well and it was a fantastic performance after that.

“We played great football and were very clinical. So it’s a huge result and hopefully one we can build on in these last few games, get a few more wins and try and finish higher up the table.”
