Sellés hails "amazing" Saints
Rubén Sellés declared Southampton’s players capable of amazing things after overseeing a performance full of commitment at Stamford Bridge, where Saints defied the odds to take three points.
First team lead coach Sellés, currently in interim charge, watched Saints start brightly against Chelsea, before taking the lead on the stroke of half time through James Ward-Prowse’s 25-yard free-kick.
In the second half Saints were forced to defend for their lives, making a series of last-ditch blocks to keep Chelsea at bay, prompting Sellés to praise the courage of his players.
“That feels incredible,” Sellés said. “To come to Stamford Bridge and set the standards that we set today, together as a unit, playing together, playing the game – not only defending but being aggressive in our pressure, playing with the ball in the moments that we needed to play, showing that we can do it together… the feeling was unbelievable.
“As I said before, if you want to win at Stamford Bridge you need to have a couple of moments that are going to be on your side, and I think we had it, but I think we also deserve it because it was a really good Southampton that we saw today, unbelievable work from the boys.
“I can only be myself and I am always positive. I think they can do amazing things, I think this group of players can do it.
“They played the way we told them to play. They add their own characters and their own skills into that system.
“We of course need to be flexible and modify during the game, because Graham [Potter] and his team make it very hard for us, but I know what we have in the dressing room and how good we can be.
“The house is amazing. I’ve never been in a club as solid as we are, so if we put the things together, it can be amazing.”
