Horseman: It's an improving group here

Southampton B team coach Dave Horseman praised the work his young group are putting in on the training ground, following the well-earned point at home to Tottenham in Premier League 2.

Saints enjoyed the majority of the ball and the majority of the chances for the duration of Sunday’s fixture, much of that down to the well-executed counter-press by Horseman’s side.

They got their reward in the 52nd minute; a well taken half volley by Sam Bellis after some good work on the left-hand-side by Will Ferry.

Despite Spurs grabbing a fortuitous own goal leveller late on, Horseman was pleased with the performance.

“It was a positive point,” he said. “But every point is a positive one.

“First half I thought we really counter pressed well with high press. Tottenham had to launch it in the end to their big number nine because every time they tried to play it short we won it back.

“We created several good opportunities which we need to be more clinical with, we could have been 3-0 up at half-time.

“There were a few scrambles but on the whole we sorted it out, they didn’t really create any big chances.

“There were lessons there about game management, how to see a game out. We’ve not put enough passes in second half, we’ve taken throw ins and thrown them into the middle of the pitch with five minutes to go.

“So real big learning points for such a young group today which we’ll go through on the learning brief to get better at.”
