Sellés: Errors are costing us
Rubén Sellés lamented the errors that cost Southampton their Emirates FA Cup progression after the fifth-round exit to Grimsby at St Mary’s.
Despite controlling the vast majority of the tie, Saints were undone by two penalties – one just before half time, one just after – that left them 2-0 down.
Duje Ćaleta-Car pulled a goal back from a James Ward-Prowse corner, but Saints were unable to find an equaliser.
“I’m very disappointed with the game today,” Sellés reflected. “I think we were prepared for the game, I think we controlled the first part of the game, it’s just errors that are costing us goals, points, and today it cost us our qualification for the next round.
“I think the first 30, 35 minutes we controlled the ball, we controlled the tempo of the game, we didn’t allow anything to the opponent.
“Then in one error for some players in the situation, we end up with a penalty. Then we set up everything to come back to the game and we give away another penalty that should never happen.
“At 2-0 down it’s a difficult situation. We were consistent, we tried to score, we scored a goal from a corner, we have a couple of goals disallowed, but the main disappointment is from us.
“I think we need to solve those situations much earlier in the action. I would be easy to go that way (to blame the decisions), but I don’t think that was the problem.
“I think the problem was in ourselves. We allowed them to be in that situation, we allowed the ball to bounce, we allowed the action to arrive because we break the offside line, to defend with the hand instead of the head – we put ourselves in those situations, not to blame anybody else.”
