Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that promising young defender, Nico Lawrence, has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2025.

After committing his future to Saints for another two years, Lawrence will depart on loan for the remainder of the season to gain his first experience of senior football with Vanarama National League outfit, Torquay United.

The centre-back penned his contract extension less than a year after joining up with Dave Horseman’s B team in February 2022.

Signed from Kent Southern Counties league side Glebe FC, Lawrence has gone from strength to strength and established himself as a mainstay in the heart of the B team defence.

In the 2022/23 season so far he’s made 16 appearances, scoring his first goal with a powerful header against Newcastle back in October.

Lawrence will now get his first taste of professional football with Torquay as he heads to the English Riviera for the remainder of the season, linking up with Gary Johnson’s side in the fifth tier.

Speaking on the deal and loan move, Academy Director Matt Hale said:

“Its great to get Nico signed on a new deal. He has shown huge progress since he joined us from non-league and adapted really well to the full time environment.

"We feel a loan is the suitable next steps for Nico and his next few months at Torquay will give him great exposure to senior football and help improve him even further.”

The club wishes Nico well for rest of the campaign, and looks forward to monitoring his progress.
