Jones on a proud night

Nathan Jones called it a "wonderful, wonderful" night as his Southampton side saw off Manchester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

The hosts stormed into a two goal lead just shy of the half hour mark, Sékou Mara's first goal for the club followed by an audacious Moussa Djenepo chip five minutes apart from each other.

City bought on the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, but couldn't find any form of a response against a spirited Saints side during the second 45.

With a return to Premier League action on the horizon following two impressive cup wins, Jones highlighted his side's strength of character at St Mary's.

"The game plan, its execution, everything about it. It was a wonderful, wonderful night.

"I’m really proud, really pleased. Proud of the players especially because they executed the game plan perfectly.

"We showed real strength, real strength of character. But look, it’s only one win. We’ve just got to continue to build now.

"We had to play well, we had to defend well, we had to be organised, aggressive in the press, we had to defend our box well. Those are our levels, those are what we attain to and now we have to continue that."
