Elyounoussi: A rollercoaster of emotions
Moi Elyounoussi reflected on a dramatic evening at St Mary’s as Southampton had to go to penalties to secure their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
With visitors Sheffield Wednesday striking first in SO14, it was only James Ward-Prowse’ equaliser from the penalty spot that kept Saints in the contest.
“It was a rollercoaster of emotions, maybe,” admitted the Norwegian. “Sheffield came here today with nothing to lose and you could see that on the pitch.
“We were probably a bit shoulders up high. We were a bit nervous, maybe. We tried a few new things. Sometimes things didn’t work quite as we wanted but we had to dig in as sometimes it is in cup games.
“Sometimes when lower teams come and give everything 110%, it’s never easy. We did the job in the end and into the next round.”
With the scores still tied as the final whistle blew, the men in white had to show their composure behind the dead ball to ensure progression.
“When you come to that in the end we looked really composed and I think all of us had a really good penalty. Mine was, I saw the goalkeeper jump early and it wasn’t really hard. It was controlled.
“I did the job in the end and I was really pleased to so you could see us at the end of the game in the middle half circle together. Not only the players, the coaching staff and the back staff.
“This shows everyone we can stick together and now we move onwards.
“Everyone is in the cup to win it, certainly us as well. We focus on the next game now Liverpool and take it from there for whenever the next one is.”
