Ibrahima Diallo highlighted the importance of using Southampton’s loss to league leaders Manchester City as a lesson for their next games in the Premier League.

With Pep Guardiola’s side scoring four at the Etihad, it was a difficult afternoon at the office for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men.

It took just 20 minutes for João Cancelo to open the scoring for the hosts, with Southampton unable to find their footing in the game from then on. `

“The difference was the level,” admitted the Frenchman. “That’s it. They were better than us. We know, I think, that’s the best team in the world right now so we tried but it was difficult today.

“We know they score a lot, we tried to defend as best as possible but it’s a very good team, so they were better.

“It’s always good to play against the best team in the world so we tried to use this game for the next games.”

Despite the disappointing result on the road, Diallo made it clear that there were crucial lessons to take from the contest.

“Not forget, we have to learn. We have to focus on the next game, we have to watch the video and use this for the next game to get better.

“It’s important. We are in a tough situation, so we have to work, prepare during the week for this tough game also. We try to win the next game at home.”

When discussing the atmosphere in the dressing room after Saints’ latest run of results, Diallo’s message was clear.

“We try to be positive, the season is long, so we have to support each other, to stay focused and to stay positive."
