Ralph Hasenhüttl lauded the influence of the Southampton fans as his side came from a goal to beat Chelsea at St Mary’s.

Despite Raheem Sterling giving the visitors the lead on 23 minutes, the revival was kickstarted just five minutes later with Roméo Lavia’s first Saints goal.

Things got better before the break; Adam Armstrong rewarded for his hard work with an instinctive finish in first-half stoppage time.

The second half was about standing firm, something the boss said was aided by the noise from the home fans.

“A first win against Chelsea since I’ve been here,” said Hasenhüttl ,”the way we have won at home. Not only because of the win and because of the atmosphere at the end. It was intense!

“It was intense for the fans and intense for the staff to coach from the outside. We had to change the shape against every situation that was dangerous.

“In the end the team showed some fantastic resilience and deserved to get something today. You felt the energy and they carried you over the last minutes because we invested a lot."
