Lyanco reflected on a positive defensive display as Southampton safely secured their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup with victory over Cambridge United.

Keeping a clean sheet at Abbey Stadium, it was an important game for Lyanco to get more game time.

“It was a good game, but it was difficult for us,” he admitted. “It’s a good game for minutes for the legs.”

“I talked with Jan (Bednarek) first, it’s good. Zero goals and we are defenders so to finish the game with zero goals is beautiful.”

Bednarek and Lyanco were joined at the back with debutant Lewis Payne, who made an impression on his first outing for Saints’ first team.

“He’s played very good. He’s quick and the fight, I like this. I talked with him now and he had a good game. The first game is a difficult game but he’s very good.”

A position Lyanco knows well, having made his debut for Saints in a Carabao Cup tie with Sheffield United in September 2021.

“Now it’s different, I know the football is more quick. The first game is so difficult, I came from Italy so it was very different but now after training for a year, it’s very different and I think I played very good.

“I want to play, I love to play here but this is for the gaffer. I need to work every day but I want to play, I am here to play.”
