Southampton FC Women make the trip up to the midlands to take on Barclays Women’s Super League side Leicester City in their final pre-season match.

Saints go into the fixture two weeks after their 0-0 stalemate with Lewes at Snows Stadium in which Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s side created chances during the first half, only to be pressed hard by the established Championship side throughout the second.

Summer addition Beth Lumsden came closest to breaking the deadlock in front of the 282 supporters, with fellow new signings Ashleigh Ward, Katie Wilkinson, Paige Peake and Megan Wynne all featuring.

Despite their slightly later league start on the weekend of Saturday 10th September, the Foxes are also well underway with their pre-season preparations having played fellow Championship side Bristol City and top division Belgian side OH Leuven, falling to 1-0 losses each time.

Leicester City have strengthened their side ready for a return to WSL football, with Josie Green, Aileen Whelan and Erin Simon all joining the side and likely to feature against Saints.

MANAGER’S NOTES“The girls have all been working really hard in training and Leicester City offers a great test for us.“Our focus is on that first league game at St Mary’s, so we’re taking this Sunday as another opportunity for the team to get more minutes and for our new signings to continue integrating into the squad.

“Leicester offer a new challenge, and seeing as we’ll be facing Women’s Super League sides this season in the Continental Cup, we want to be testing ourselves at that level.”
