Hasenhüttl: Simply not good enough

Ralph Hasenhüttl admitted Southampton’s performance against Brentford was ‘simply not good enough’, as his side fell to a 3-0 defeat in West London on Saturday.

With two goals in quick succession seeing the hosts with a two goal advantage after 15 minutes of play, it was an uphill battle for Hasenhüttl’s side to find a way back into the game.

Though Saints continued to press and search for goals, their performance in front of goal meant it finished 3-0 on a disappointing afternoon at Brentford Community Stadium.

“The better team in and around the box has won today,” admitted the boss. “This is where the football is decided. They had better finishing and defending in these zones and this is the reason why they deserved to win against a team, at the moment, not able to hold a game open.

“We conceded two easy goals in the first-half. We had a good start but when you concede an easy goal you can’t always turn a game around with two goals down, especially not here.

“We were simply not good enough. When you defend like this, against a team like this in the Premier League you are not able to win games, that’s for sure.

“In and around the box we were lacking the final punch, the final decisions and maybe the last step. The opponent showed us today how it works.

“We were getting there; we had the chances – no less than they had I think. But they made a difference today.

“The next game is against the best team in the world and then we play against Leicester so we have two more opportunities to show up.”
