Vitality Women’s FA Cup – fourth round

St Mary’s Stadium

Sunday 30th January, 1pm GMT

For the second time in their history, Southampton FC Women will play at St Mary’s Stadium in competitive action, this time hosting Championship side Bristol City in the FA Cup.

Saints’ run in the competition this year started in mid-November, when Lucia Kendall’s first half goal was enough to see off Swindon Town at Snows Stadium.

The next round proved more of a challenge; travelling to face south coast rivals Portsmouth at Westleigh Park, where a Caitlin Morris extra-time winner confirmed Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s side’s 2-1 comeback in December.

Sunday’s opponents Bristol entered the competition a round later, their only outing so far a 5-0 victory over fellow Championship side Lewes FC in the third round.

City were relegated from the Super League last season, finding themselves 6th in the second division this campaign after 12 games.

Although the result didn’t go their way on the day, over 4,000 fans filled St Mary’s the last time Saints played there during the 2019/20 FA Cup run.

You can be part of the action this time around, with tickets costing as much as £3 per person.

“It’s an exciting prospect,” said manager Spacey-Cale. “It’s a real marker of where we’re at because they’re in the Championship and playing really well.

“We’re going to go into it as underdogs but what we have to do is concentrate on ourselves, focus on what we can do.

“The girls worked really hard against Chichester on Wednesday, now it’s about recovery and getting the girls into the best position and the best place they can be ready for Sunday.

“It’s exciting. We’re at St Mary’s, the girls will be buzzing to get out there and hoping to perform for the club and for the fans of the club.

“The fans have been brilliant this season and what’s really helped is when they’re loud they are like another player on the pitch for us.

“When they’re singing, we feel that they’re part of us. So on Sunday let’s raise the roof. It’s a fortress for the guys at the moment so let’s make it a fortress for the women’s team as well.”
