Southampton’s Head of Women and Girl’s Football Marieanne Spacey-Cale MBE has been presented with an Honorary Degree in Sport from Solent University.

After becoming one of the most successful names in the women’s game as a player for club and country, Spacey-Cale continues to progress within her coaching career at the helm of Southampton FC Women, guiding Saints to two promotions and their highest ever position within the women's footballing pyramid.

With over 90 caps and 28 goals as an England international, alongside FA Cup wins at the likes of Arsenal and Fulham during her playing career, she received additional honours that include a league and cup double with Saints and a Nordic tournament winners medal with her country after hanging up her boots.

if I can inspire others to be part of a fantastic journey like i've had then it’s well worth it.

As far as academic accolades go this is Spacey-Cale’s second honorary degree, having received a Masters in Sports Coaching from Worcester University in November 2018.

On receiving her second honorary doctorate, Spacey-Cale said: "These are things that you never think you’re going to get because I have to be honest, when I was at school I wasn’t very academic.

"I just wanted to be outside playing sport and doing things that I really enjoy, but over the years I’ve become much more of a student of the game I guess.

I was nervous about the speech and nervous about robing up again and everything but if I can inspire others to be part of a fantastic journey like I've had then it’s well worth it."
