Ibrahima Diallo hailed a special evening at Bramall Lane as he netted for the first time in a Southampton shirt, as Saints progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Saints went behind early on in Sheffield before debut goals from Diallo and Mohammed Salisu saw the visitors regain the lead.

It didn’t last long, though, as Oli McBurnie drew his side level in the 66th minute before Saints claimed victory after a tense penalty shootout.

“It’s pretty special,” he admitted. “It’s not just my first goal for Southampton tonight, it’s my first goal in my young career. I’m very happy tonight and with a win it’s perfect.”

It didn’t take long for Diallo to claim another goal for Saints as he was trusted with the ball from the penalty spot.

“The coach wanted me to have the ball, so I take the penalty and I was confident, I’m happy to have scored.

“Personally, it was a great game. It was a tough game against a good team so I’m happy to win tonight.

“Like every player, when you have the chance to play you have to show your quality.”
