McCarthy: Positives to take

Alex McCarthy praised a positive performance as Southampton held West Ham to a 0-0 draw at St Mary’s.

Chances were few and far between for both sides, with West Ham failing to get the better of McCarthy on the south coast.

Armando Broja’s introduction saw Saints come agonisingly close to breaking the stalemate as the game drew to a close, but the match finished with the spoils shared.

“Obviously I’m satisfied to get the first clean sheet of the season," admitted McCarthy. "I thought we might have deserved more than a point, maybe three points.

“I thought we defended excellently today and in the second half, we had a couple of great chances towards the end, it was just unfortunate it didn’t go in.

“Obviously they’ve had a great start to the season, we always know how hard it’s going to be against West Ham because they’re a very physical team.

“I think all over the pitch today everyone did their jobs excellently. Obviously last season when they came here it was 0-0 as well, it’s just a little bit frustrating today that we couldn’t come away with the win."

While McCarthy was pleased with his performance today, it's all about looking forward and building on today's clean sheet.

“I like to help the team as much as possible when I can. I’m delighted to get my first clean sheet of the season, hopefully I’ll get many more.

“There’s a lot of positives we can take out of today and take it into next week against Man City,

“It is frustrating not having that first win but it’ll come if we keep doing things right, keep training right."
