Scienza: The important thing was just to win
Match-winner Leo Scienza stressed the importance of his side's return to winning ways, after Southampton's 1-0 victory over Sheffield United.
It was the Brazilian's deflected strike after just seven minutes that proved to be the difference on the night at St Mary's Stadium, putting a timely end to their seven-game winless streak.
Reflecting on the result, Scienza said: "It's amazing [to win], it's just important. It doesn't matter whether it's a beautiful win or an ugly win, a beautiful goal or an ugly goal like it was today, the important thing was just to win after seven or eight games.
"It's just important to have this feeling again and try to go in the right direction now."
On the winning goal, Scienza's first since Saints' last victory, which came over West Bromwich Albion in December, the forward admitted that it wasn't one for the showreel despite it's importance.
"It was a job made from [Welington] to me, and it was a bit lucky but we're working hard to get this kind of luck sometimes so I'm happy that happened today. I don't even care so much today about my goal, I'm just very happy that we finally got three points again.
"We are not in a phase that everything is working out, today we had a bit of luck but we also fight a lot and we just have to bring these kinds of games over the line, because that's the difference of being constant and having a good balance, you see the teams that are on top they win these kind of games, the ugly games, and we have to start doing the same. Today was an important step hopefully in the right direction."
Saints' three points comes at an important time with the south coast derby on the horizon, as Scienza issued a rallying cry ahead of Sunday's trip to Fratton Park.
"It's very exciting, it's a big game, it's very important to win before a game like this to give us a big push, but on Sunday everything will be different.
"It's not so much tactical or beautiful, it's just fighting and who wants it more will win the game - we just have to, again, shut up and go there and do our best, defend the badge and try to show who is the biggest team in the south."
