Fourth official: Sam Allison.

A place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup is up for grabs as League One Sheffield Wednesday travel to St Mary’s.

Saints will be looking to bounce back after defeat to Newcastle at the weekend, with Rubén Sellés taking charge of the tie as Saints search for a new manager after the departure of Ralph Hasenhüttl.

Claiming victory over Cambridge United in the second round of the competition, it is likely the men in white will field a younger side in SO14 on Wednesday.

Darren Moore’s side are unbeaten in seven matches in all competitions, losing just once in ten outings having only fallen to League One leaders Plymouth Argyle.

Wednesday have kept two clean sheets already in this competition, claiming victory over Championship side Sunderland and League Two Rochdale in the earlier stages of the competition.

Should the cup-tie be level after 90 minutes, it will go straight to penalties to decide the winner.

Saints will be without Juan Larios, who picked up an injury against Newcastle at the weekend. He joins Tino Livramento and Kyle Walker-Peters on the side-lines.

For the visitors, Mallik Wilks and Alex Mighten are cup-tied and will not be available for the tie, while Cameron Dawson will miss out with a concussion injury.

James Ward-Prowse: “I think it’s a good distraction for us. Different opposition and a good chance for everybody to hopefully get some minutes and we can start a little bit of momentum and get a good result.”

Darren Moore: "Southampton are a Premier League team but we will go down there and prepare as best as we possibly can. We know they are an excellent team. They have got some exceptional players, but we have earned the right to go and play against them.”

Dom Ballard: Having excelled in both Under-18 and Under-21 action this year, 17-year-old Dom Ballard could play a crucial role in Wednesday night’s squad, having scored the third goal in Saints’ victory over Cambridge last time out in the competition.

It’s been a hugely impressive start to the season for the 32-year-old, playing a pivotal role in Sheffield Wednesday’s resurgence as they go in search of a place in the Championship.
