Lynda Hale: Southampton remembers
Southampton Football Club pays tribute to legendary local footballer and member of the original England Women's team, Lynda Hale, following news of her passing.
Born in Southampton, Lynda Hale was a trailblazing figure in women's football at a local and national level, as she played and scored in the first ever official England Women’s fixture.
At just 18 years of age, she started the historic game against Scotland at Ravenscraig Park in November 1972 and went on to score in a 3-2 victory for the Lionesses in Greenock.
She scored three goals in ten appearances for her country, playing her final game against Switzerland in a 9-1 home victory in Hull.
She represented her home city to great success with a remarkable seven Women’s FA Cup wins, including the first ever Women’s FA Cup Final in 1971, whilst playing for Southampton Women's FC.
In November 2022, she was recognised as the seventh player to represent the Lionesses when The FA allocated legacy numbers.
Lynda will forever be remembered and celebrated as a pioneering figure in the Women's game for the city of Southampton and England's national team.
