Tonda Eckert is determined to sign off a productive month in style when Southampton head to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (3pm GMT).

Tuesday’s 5-0 thumping of QPR made it four wins and a draw in February ahead of this weekend’s trip to Hillsborough.

The already-relegated Owls have won only once all season, a 2-0 victory at Fratton Park way back in September, but Eckert is keen to see his in-form Saints keep their foot on the gas in their quest for a play-off place.

“It’s step after step. We need to stay humble, we need to put our head down and keep working, it’s a big game coming up on the weekend,” he said, speaking after his side’s midweek mauling at St Mary’s.

“We are still far away from where we want to be. We need to keep pushing, I think there is some progress. We need to make sure we turn this into a very good month, and we do this by winning on the weekend.

“Overall we just need to make sure we grow more and more together. I think we are in the middle of the process, the results obviously help, but I think that we are moving in the right direction.”

Saints will be backed by more than 3,200 travelling fans at Hillsborough, prompting Eckert to emphasise the importance of a united club, on and off the pitch.

“If we want to achieve something big this season, we are only going to do this together. I think that is so clear," he added.

“The support at home has been excellent, I think the support away has been absolutely outstanding. We just need to make sure that we keep going.”
