Eckert: No doubt we were going to win
Tonda Eckert rehiterated the confidence in his squad following a late Championship victory for Southampton at Swansea City, stretching the unbeaten run to 19 games.
Saints went in at the break a goal down after Marko Stamenić’s close-range opener in the 20th minute, but came out firing after the break with substitute Shea Charles equalising inside 12 second half minutes.
Eckert's side had to wait until the final minute of normal time to grab their winner, another from the bench in Cameron Archer, who added to his goal and assist during Tuesday night's win over Blackburn, with a vital strike from the edge of the box. Securing a seventh straight league victory.
"For me there was no doubt at any time that we were going to win this game," reflect Eckert. "It was exactly the same thing against Derby. Sometimes it happens, it happened against Derby at the corner, it happened today on a throw in. The belief is there in the group and I was sure at all times we were going to win.
"It was a top performance today over 90 minutes. This is the ground where you have to run the most, where you need to cover the most distance in the whole Championship. I think they came out very strong in the first ten minutes. We knew that first ten is going to be crucial for us, then we were completely dominant for the rest of the game."
On the goals from his two substitutes Eckert added: "You need [everyone playing their part] at this stage of the season. I think there's not many teams, not in the Championship and not in the league higher up, that have so many players available and ready to perform at every moment.
"This speaks for the group, speaks for the players, speaks for everyone who works around them. I think that's so important when you come towards April, when you come towards May, that you have a big selection of players that are ready to perform. Big compliment to the boys who came out today."
Saints' next home match sees us take on Bristol City at St Mary's on Tuesday 21st April (7.45pm BST). Tickets are on general sale now, starting from £25 for Adults and £15 for Juniors.
