Eckert hails “massive performance” after Coventry victory
Tonda Eckert praised his side’s resilience after Southampton secured an impressive 2-1 victory away to league leaders Coventry City.
Saints were required to dig deep to claim all three points on the road, bringing a demanding run of away fixtures to a positive end with a committed performance.
“It was a massive performance. It’s such a difficult place to go to,” Eckert said. “They’ve lost only one game at home all season. They’ve won the last six games, so it was two teams full of confidence.
“I think we got the better of them today and had a very well deserved win over 98 and a half minutes!"
The result brought an end to a challenging block of four consecutive away matches, something Eckert felt made the performance even more pleasing.
“It hasn’t been easy, that block,” he continued. “I’m so happy that we can return to St Mary's and play a couple of games at home.
“It shows even more the dedication of the boys to hang in there for the very, very end.”
Saints were also helped by key defensive moments, including a remarkable save from Daniel Peretz during the first half.
“If you look back at the last four games there’s not much that we conceded from open play,” Eckert added.
“The resilience shows we are willing and ready to defend, especially in the moments where it’s tough. And sometimes you just need a goalkeeper, and Daniel was spot on today.”
Flynn Downes also received praise after marking his 100th appearance for the club with the opening goal of the game.
“If you see how that goal develops, I think he starts from very deep on the pitch and then goes all the way,” Eckert said.
“He was also the one to speak before the game. He’s just in a very good spot and has grown into a leader more and more. You can see how much responsibility he takes on the pitch.”
