It’s the second outing in the competition this season for Dave Horseman’s side, who fell to a 3-1 defeat at Forest Green Rovers in late August.

Olly Lancashire gave Saints the lead just past the half hour mark, before the hosts netted three either side of the break.

Exeter City’s only outing in the competition came at home to League Two side Newport County where, despite Saints loanee Kegs Chauke giving his side the opener, they fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Wins for either side at this early stage could see considerable movement in Group N, with Exeter City and Saints sitting in third and fourth respectively.

The two senior sides last faced each other in February 2011, where a late Rickie Lambert double handed Saints three points at St James Park.

Daniel Nardiello gave the hosts the lead on 39 minutes, before Lambert hit twice on 70 and 90 to turn the game on it’s head.

It helped secure a double in League One for Nigel Adkins’s side, who won the return fixture 4-0 at St Mary’s Stadium earlier in the season.

Guly Do Prado got two before Adam Lallana and Lee Barnard completed the scoring.

“The games in this competition are what it’s all about for our side,” said Horseman.

“We want to be tested against League One opposition, experienced players, in a proper stadium in front of several thousand fans.

“It’s been a few days since we’ve last played so we’re eager to get back out there, put into practise the good work we’ve done on the training pitch.

“Exeter will pose a good test but one that we’re looking forward to and one that, if we do our basics right, I’m sure we’ll do well in.”
