Southampton manager Rubén Sellés felt his side’s 1-0 win over Leicester was vital in showing the football world that Saints are still very much alive in the Premier League.

By his own admission, it’s been a difficult week for Sellés and co. following defeats to Leeds in the league and Grimsby in the Emirates FA Cup, but Saints came out fighting against the Foxes.

Quickly overcoming the disappointment of James Ward-Prowse’s first-half penalty miss, the hosts soon took the lead from open play through Carlos Alcaraz, digging deep after the interval to hold on to a second 1-0 victory in three Premier League outings.

“It’s a big result for the team, a big three points and we show everybody that we are alive.” Sellés said.

“It was not the best game of football that we put out there, but I think it was proof that the dressing room is alive and the boys want to do it – they want to work together, play together, fight together.

“We have had some hard conversations in the last couple of days when we have put some reality on us, and I think the response from them was amazing. With that spirit, we can win football matches.

“I think when you go through those hard moments, the worst thing you can do is just forget. As I said after the game in the cup, as I said after Leeds, we need to learn from those moments.

“It’s very important when we have a defeat or we have a situation that is not pleasing for us, we need to learn, we need to analyse.

“We don’t need to overanalyse, but we need to feel the pain to be out of the cup, topping up some of the things we need to improve. I think we did that, and now we need to move forward.”
