Walker-Peters: We weren't at our level
Kyle Walker-Peters reflected on a lacklustre Southampton performance, as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League.
On a Friday night under the lights at Villa Park, Southampton failed to find an opening against Steven Gerrard’s side.
“Really disappointed,” he admitted. “We were disappointed at half time, we spoke about being more aggressive, winning more duals, winning more second balls because it felt like they were winning all of them. The same at full time, they won the battle.
“I think they just bettered us in that intensity and that aggression. When a team does that and is more aggressive and more intense than you, it’s tough to win.
“I haven’t seen [the goal] back yet. I’m sure when I go back in the dressing room we’ll go back and review it. Although it was a narrow defeat, I don’t think we deserved much from the game. I don’t think we were at our level and we were punished.”
With Saints trailing at the break, Hasenhüttl looked to make changes to find a way back into the game, but it wasn’t to be.
“It’s tough but at the end of the day we want to win games, so we came out with the intention of getting a goal back and then trying to go on and win the game. It didn’t happen for us today; it wasn’t really clicking for us. We didn’t have a shot on target, it’s a tough one to say we deserved anything from the game.
“A few of the boys said it at half time. They’re under pressure, they really need to win this game and we’ve got to take it to them, and I don’t think we did that enough. I don’t think we put our stamp on the game when we really should have.”
