Hasenhüttl: We tried everything

Ralph Hasenhüttl insisted he was proud of his Southampton side in defeat at Molineux.

Saints were beaten by Daniel Podence’s goal on the stroke of half time, as Wolves secured their first Premier League win of the season.

Hasenhüttl’s side ought to have taken at least a point from the contest, with Ché Adams spurning a glorious opportunity to equalise from close range before hitting the crossbar soon after, leaving the boss disappointed with the result, if not the performance.

“Very frustrating. When you see the chances we had in the second half, you have to take something today,” he said.

“It (the defeat) shouldn’t happen, but we have to accept it, although it’s hard to take.

“I think we showed for the whole game how resilient we are and how good we can play; created chances, and in the end missed only the goal. That was the only thing that was missing today.”

Podence’s 45th-minute strike, an untidy finish that bounced over Gavin Bazunu, was a rare example of Saints looking exposed at the back, and prompted Hasenhüttl to make attacking substitutions in the second half, including the introduction of debutants Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Samuel Edozie, with Edozie running Wolves ragged in the closing stages.

“The resilience was not good in that moment, being too open that time, especially so close to the half time. That is something of a mistake, which was a little bit naïve,” the manager said of the goal.

“We had to try and change things. We went all in at the end, we tried. It’s not easy because of the rhythm breaking and everything that is happening then, but in the end I cannot say that I am not proud of what we have done today.

“We tried everything, and that’s how it should be.”
