Adam Armstrong reflected on a hard-fought victory over Chelsea on Tuesday, with the striker scoring the decisive second goal for Southampton at St Mary’s.

After going behind courtesy of Raheem Sterling’s opener, a resilient Saints side put on a mesmerising display to secure three points in front of a packed-out St Mary’s.

“We had to work hard tonight, that was the main thing,” admitted the goal scorer. “We knew coming off of Saturday’s game against Man U that we probably should’ve got something from the game but when you’re playing against the top sides, I feel like you’ve got to take your chances and tonight we did.

“It’s always tough when you go behind in this league. You know what quality the Premier League is. The lads are working hard every day, to create chances, to fence them off. It’s something that we lacked Saturday and it’s something we’ve done tonight.”

It was an important occasion for the 25-year-old on an individual level, notching his first goal of the Premier League season.

“It’s always good to get on the scoresheet, something I haven’t been doing lately. It’s good to be back out there and performing well.

“When I saw it go wide, I saw the defence drop off and that was my chance to create a little bit of space and luckily Romain picked us out and I put it away."

It’s a new look Southampton side, who are switching formation and have a whole host of younger players to bring fresh spirit into Hasenhüttl’s play.

“It shows what we’ve got in this group. The belief, the work rate that we put in every day and it showed on the pitch tonight.”

“I’ve done it quite a lot, my first spell at Blackburn for about a year and a half maybe. I had to bide my time. Tonight, I felt like I worked hard on the ball, obviously I’ve still got to get a bit better, but it was good to get the goal.

“It’s a different way of playing. I’m still learning. I feel like I’m still young but not when you look around this group, it’s getting younger and younger. It’s good, I’m creating chances and put one away tonight.

“Obviously it’s a young squad but there’s still a lot of senior players in the dressing room. A lot of players that have played a lot of games that can help the young lads along the way.”
