Redmond: We need to learn

With Southampton signing off at St Mary’s for the season with a narrow defeat at the hands of title-chasing Liverpool, Nathan Redmond delivered an honest assessment following the 2-1 defeat.

The attacker put Saints ahead after 17 minutes with his first Premier League goal of the season, cutting inside from the left before immaculately picking out the top corner from the edge of the box.

However, Jürgen Klopp’s side battled back with Takumi Minamino firing against the side he spent a loan spell with last season, before Joel Matip completed the comeback after the break to inflict a third straight defeat on the hosts.

Commenting on the curtain closer on the south coat, Redmond said: “Looking back on the game, we defended quite well in areas but it’s quite hard to maintain pressure like that for 90 minutes.

“I think in the end, you’re always going to be up against quality that is going to hurt you.

“It’s always tough, but we tried to make sure that we didn’t just roll over and let them come here and have a result.

“We wanted to have a go and worked on something new in terms of patterns of play and playing out from the back in a back five, which we’ve been working on in training, which is something we need to work on next season if we want to adapt as a team with a change in formation.”

Commenting more widely on Saints’ downturn in form, the 28-year-old looked ahead to what needs to be addressed ahead of 2022/23.

“We have a spell where we do very, very well and then a spell where we turn one game of losing, or two games, into four, five, six and that’s something as a group we need to learn on.

“Once we lose the first game, we need to rectify the next game so we don’t lose and pick up a point or three points.

“I think teams that are in the top half of the table, and top five, they make sure the next game they don’t lose and they regroup very, very quickly and that’s what we have to do as a group going forward.”
