Perraud: It was not enough

Romain Perraud admitted Southampton came up short against a Burnley side fighting for their Premier League lives at Turf Moor.

The hosts scored twice in the first half, through defenders Connor Roberts and Nathan Collins, to take maximum points and move to within touching distance of nearest rivals Everton in the survival race.

Perraud now says Saints owe their supporters a response when they return to action at Brighton on Sunday, with a quick turnaround on the horizon between away days.

“I think we began the game in a good shape with good intensity, more aggressive than them, but we had two situations – two opportunities to score – and we didn’t score,” he reflected.

“After, we lost so many duels – everything to win the game – so it’s not enough, to be honest. This team (Burnley) plays to stay in the Premier League – they give their lives on the pitch.

“For us, tonight, it was not enough. Last week, against Arsenal, we played like Burnley did tonight, but tonight I think we missed so many ways of playing football.

“I think we have to forget this game and now we have to be focused on Brighton. For our fans, for the club, we have to give a big answer, because tonight our mindset was not good.

“Sunday we will play a team like us in the same position, I think, with the same number of points. I think it will be an open game to play, and we have to give everything on Sunday.”
