Bednarek lauds "outstanding" Forster
Jan Bednarek praised the “outstanding” contribution of Fraser Forster as the Southampton goalkeeper produced an inspired performance to help the team to victory over Arsenal at St Mary’s.
Man-of-the-match Forster proved unbeatable in the Saints goal, with Bednarek singling out his first-half save from Bukayo Saka as a key moment in the game.
The Polish defender scored the only goal just before the interval, but took just as much satisfaction from the clean sheet as Saints picked up a first win in seven matches.
“Obviously it could go either way but thankfully we had Fraser in the goal, who made a fantastic performance and we kept a clean sheet, so that’s good,” Bednarek said.
“I think Fraser made a good game against Chelsea – the problem was they had so many chances that he couldn’t keep a clean sheet and he conceded six goals.
“Thankfully today we kept a clean sheet, but he was outstanding with the saves he made.
“When it was 0-0, there was a 100 per cent clear chance and he saved it – unreal. He kept us alive and thankfully we got three points.
A statement result against the Champions League hopefuls was made all the more impressive after the 6-0 home loss to Chelsea last time out.
“After last week it was important for us to be solid, to stay compact, to try to defend as well as we can and score some goals,” Bednarek continued. “It worked.
“We knew it was not about style today, it wasn’t about the way we play. It was more about the result, to get three points after the bad run we’ve had was crucial for us.
“We got it, three points, but now we have to keep on going, keep on working hard in defence but be a little bit more creative in our attacking stuff.”
