Ché Adams reflected on a difficult afternoon at St Mary’s as Southampton fell to a 6-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Three goals down after just 20 minutes, it was an uphill battle for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men from the offset.

“It’s been very difficult,” admitted Adams. “It’s not nice to concede so many goals and at home, in front of our home fans.

“We’ve got to look at ourselves in the mirror now and dust ourselves off. We’ve got another hard game next week.

“We created a few chances, I had one in the second half that I should have scored. It wasn’t our day today; they took all of their chances.”

Thomas Tuchel’s side had a point to prove after losing out to Brentford and Real Madrid in the last week, with their performance today going a long way to right their wrongs.

“They’re a great team and everyone knows how well we press against the ball and today we just couldn’t get near them.

“It’s difficult to say because they were very, very good and when we’re not at it you can see a difference in the way that we play and the way that we press.

“We were speaking, and we’ve got more points than we got last year and we’ve still got more games to come so we have to fight now until the end of the season.

“Days like today aren’t nice, both as a player and as a fan so we just need to dust ourselves down.”

The support from the home fans did not go unnoticed by Adams, who is eager to bounce back next weekend to repay the loyal following.

“It’s important to us and it’s important to show the fans. They stayed at 6-0 down, 5-0 down they were actually clapping us so fair play to them.

“We needed that today. It wasn’t easy and everyone knows how well we can play and today wasn’t the day.”
