Ralph Hasenhüttl reflected on a disappointing afternoon at Molineux as his Southampton side fell to a 3-1 defeat to Wolves.

Despite a sublime wonder strike from James Ward-Prowse which provided Saints with a glimmer of hope, it wasn’t to be for Hasenhüttl’s men on their first Premier League away fixture of 2022.

“I think we had more chances in the end than they had, definitely,” admitted the boss. “We never stopped fighting for the result, after Prowsey’s unbelievable free-kick there was another chance for Romain where he has to make the goal.

“This is the thing where we have to complain that we have the chances but either the goalkeeper made good saves or we haven't found the back of the net but we tried everything.”

The boss also had his say on that sublime strike from his captain that finally saw Saints get past José Sá.

“It’s a longer distance, it’s not possible to deliver on the inside of the foot. For me this was, I think, the best I’ve seen from him. Better than the others all over the world, this was for me unbelievable.”

With VAR consulted a number of times during Saturday’s clash, Hasenhüttl had his say on Southampton’s penalty appeal in the second half.

“When you give this one, then you have to give the other one. I think the problem is VAR told him check completed. I think if he looks at this situation, I’m sure he gives it again because the referee did a fantastic job today.

“You don’t get a lot of chances here but in the end, it’s a pity we didn’t take something today and I think it would’ve been deserved.

“We have lost today, this is the disappointing part but the rest, I must say I’m proud of what we are doing and how we are fighting everything.”
