Midfielder Oriol Romeu was left encouraged after Southampton recorded their third consecutive pre-season win, as fans also returned at St Mary’s Stadium.

A solo strike from Kyle Walker-Peters was enough for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side to overcome La Liga outfit Levante UD, with the stand-in Saints captain happy with the win that built on victories over Cardiff and Swansea last week.

“It was a very solid performance,” he said. “The team is playing some good football. I would say we more vertical and we’re creating a lot of questions for the opponents.

“They find it hard to build out from the back, which is something that we’ve always done pretty well, but we’re still getting better at that.

“There are some things to improve – we could’ve scored a couple more – but overall we got a cleansheet and won the game against a strong team, with a good 90 minutes for most of the lads which is great.

“We’re trying to as soon we get the chance, to hurt the opponent,” Romeu continued. “We don’t want to make them feel comfortable when we have the ball.

“We want to have different ways of attacking that’s going to give more solutions, so hopefully we can build on that and get stronger.”

With Saints fans back to witness the latest pre-season win, Romeu hopes to welcome them back in 2021/22 with strong home form.

“It was lovely to have some people around and have some fans back, especially when you score or get the ball back.

“We want to make this a tough place to come and compete, and we want as many points at home, so getting that connection with the fans and with the team is crucial.”
