Southampton FC Women are delighted to announce the signing of experienced midfielder Leeta Rutherford from Championship side Crystal Palace.

Rutherford joins an ever-growing group of senior players within the squad, having represented Portsmouth, Brighton, Lewes, London City Lionesses and, most recently, Crystal Palace during her career.

Last season the 33-year-old made 15 appearances for Palace in the Championship in what was her second season at the south London club.

Having played in Tier 3 previously, Rutherford joins the group with an understanding of what it takes to compete in National League Southern Premier as Saints continue their progression up the domestic leagues.

The midfielder said: “It’s amazing to be here. The set-up, the people, it’s a really nice club and it’s a great feel when you walk through the door.

What I've seen from Southampton over the last two, three years is that they've just been growing and growing.

“I’ve played in this league before with the team down the road and obviously the league above too. Experience is one of my strong points, leadership too and being an all-round character to be around the girls.

“They’ve got a really young squad here, which is amazing to see. They train well, they’re fit, they’re strong, you wouldn’t think that they are playing in the league they are in.

“Of course you’ve got to strive for promotion; we’ve just joined this league but the squad we’ve got here are more than capable of being promoted again."
