Ralph Hasenhüttl hailed a brave performance from Southampton, as they claimed a vital point against Leicester City at St Mary's.

Despite being reduced to ten men early on in the match after Jannik Vestergaard saw a controverial red card in the tenth minute, Saints dug deep to secure a point against third place Leicester City.

“Congratulations for what they have done today, especially in the defence it was very tough work to do," said the boss. "But when you do it like this then you deserve to get something.

“I think the red card wasn’t really a red card and when you get punished like this with a VAR decision, I don’t know if it’s necessary to give a red.

“The most important thing, and this is what we should speak about, is the effort we put into it."

Hasenhüttl was informed by officials that Vestergaard was denying a clear chance on goal.

“But for me it was not really a clear goal chance as Vardy never controlled the ball. He was never on the ball, it was a pass back to the goalkeeper. For me, it’s hard to understand," he added.

“We had to change immediately, get a centre back on the pitch. We cannot wait too long like last time when we were waiting too long, I think we have learnt in this moment to act quicker, and to bring the centre back on and defend as a team.

“I think we did it in a good way and it was clear we were good under pressure for 80 minutes. Immediately we’re on the pitch, well organised. After the goal we scored there was another chance to score more but maybe it was a little too much

“We must get stronger when such things happen because it happens in football sometimes and I think they all fought for Jannik, this is how it should be as a team.

i want to give every goalkeeper a chance to play in the final six games, and we will change again, for sure.

“Today, I must say, I was proud of every player working on the pitch.

“He’s [Ward-Prowse] for us important as a captain on the pitch. I didn’t see the penalty, I didn’t look at it but it was a goal. It was a pity we then conceded the equaliser but after the equaliser it was then difficult because the belief of the opponent is there again. From then it was getting tough, I think for the last 20 minutes to go so it was a long time.”

“I want to give every goalkeeper a chance to play in the final six games, and we will change again, for sure. Fraser will get a few games because he also did a fantastic job in some important games and this is what we want to do and still perform as a team and perform very well.

“They work for everything, fight for everything. This is what we wanted to show today, being brave in the right moments and also competing in and around the box.”
