Danny Ings hails a spirited team performance as Southampton claimed a 3-2 victory over Burnley in the Premier League.

It was a rocky start for Saints as they found themselves 2-0 down after just 28 minutes at St Mary’s.

A Stuart Armstrong strike launched Saints back into contention and kick-started the comeback.

Having missed out on a number of games before the break, Danny Ings made an emphatic return to the starting lineup.

Not only did Ings score the equaliser, he was involved in all three goals for Saints as they claimed their first Premier League win at St Mary’s since January 4th.

“We didn’t start good enough, I think we knew that,” Ings gave an honest reflection of the tie. “Going two down, that triggered us that we needed to be better and from that moment I think we controlled the game for the most part until they were chasing at the end.

“We created a lot of chances today which has been quite tough in recent weeks. To get the win after the international break is huge and something we can build on.

“Having been there [Burnley] for a few years I know all about it and how tough it can be to play against, I thought the lads showed great character to get back into the game and we kept going. In the end we were throwing our bodies on the line to make sure we got the three points.

“You talk about Premier League survival, it goes to show how difficult it has been for us this year. The form that we had at the start of the season compared to where we were at before the international break. To put that behind us, to start afresh and start with a win is huge and something we can build on.

“I think it’s the work on the training pitch. Us as players know that as a team other results haven’t been good enough, we wanted to put that right.

“We put the work in over the international break, quite a few lads were away with their countries but now we’re back together, back on the training pitch and working hard.

“It’s been quite an interrupted season for me personally, it’s been quite difficult to get going but now that I’m back fit I want to keep scoring and helping the team as much as I can.

“I’m extremely happy. I’ve worked hard whilst I’ve been out to make sure I’m in the best shape possible to come back into and I thought that it showed in the game.

“Team goals come before personal goals in my opinion but more results like today would be fantastic.”
