Walker-Peters: It wasn't our day

Southampton's defeat to Leicester City a lesson rather than a loss, Kyle Walker-Peters said, as he reflected on a disappointing defeat to Brendan Rodgers' side.

Despite a promising start and some real attacking prowess from Saints, a 37th minute goal from James Maddison kick-started Leicester’s ultimate win over a somewhat depleted Saints side.

Saints dominated the opening stages of the match with Theo Walcott and Ché Adams making some really nice link-up play in the first-half.

While there were many positives to take from tonight’s match, there was one overwhelming feeling for Walker-Peters.

“Disappointed,” he said. “We’re always disappointed to lose. I think we started the game on top. Unfortunate not to take one of those chances, for not taking those chances we got punished.”

"Away from home you always want to try and get the first goal and unsettle the home team. Unfortunately we weren’t able to do that and we paid the price," a dejected Walker-Peters continued.

"I feel like we tried everything, today just wasn’t our day. Stu [Armstrong] hits the bar, on another day it goes in the top corner."

"We always say you don’t lose you learn, we try and keep that as part of the mentality of the team. We’ll look back at the game, see where we went wrong and put it right for the next game."

Looking ahead to Tuesday's rescheduled FA Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town, Walker-Peters added to that positive mentality.

"You want to go on a run in every cup competition. We take it game by game, so we haven’t actually focused on it too much. I’m sure everyone wants to go on a good run and hopefully get to the final.”
