Ward-Prowse: We got punished

James Ward-Prowse felt Southampton’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle at St Mary’s underlined the ruthlessness of the Premier League.

Saints matched their in-form visitors for much of the game, but the quality of both teams’ finishing ultimately decided the outcome, as Newcastle’s four shots on target all found the net.

In contrast, Saints spurned two golden chances to equalise, before two goals in four minutes took the game away from the hosts.

“Frustrated, disappointed. I don’t think we played particularly badly today, I didn’t think we deserved to lose the game 4-1, but we know all about the Premier League and the clinical nature of it,” Ward-Prowse reflected.

“When you come up against these sorts of teams and you don’t take your chances, you get punished.

“They had four efforts I think on goal today, and they scored four goals, and that says a lot about the quality they have and the clinical nature of this league.

“We need to take our chances and be tighter at the back – that’s ultimately cost us today.”
