James Ward-Prowse issued an apology to the travelling fans after Southampton fell to a 3-0 defeat at Brentford in the Premier League.

Brentford scored two inside three minutes just before the break; Ben Mee heading home the opener on 40 minutes before Bryan Mbuemo made it two on 43.

Saints showed signs of a response in the second but the result was sealed 11 minutes from time through Mathias Jensen’s header.

“We can only apologise to the fans because we know that’s not good enough,” said Ward-Prowse.

“I think individually when you step out onto the pitch in the Premier League you have to show up, you have to run your heart out and give everything. I don’t feel like we’re doing that at the moment and that’s the disappointing thing.

“It’s really important when you come away to a place like Brentford you know it’s going to be tough, it’s a team that’s in a positive moment, we have to be more resilient, we have to be tough to beat at first to give us a chance to go on and win it.

“But when you give goals away as stupid as we have done in the last two games and probably throughout the whole season, it makes your task a whole more difficult. It’s only us to blame today.

“We’ve got week-to-week games now so it gives you a chance to work on those things in the training week. But it all starts with your mentality and how you want to approach the game and if we can change that then I think we’ll have a chance."
