Tella: We need to make amends

Nathan Tella reflected on a disappointing afternoon at Emirates Stadium as Southampton fell to a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League.

Saints got off to a positive start in North London but failed to monopolise on their chances before Lacazette fired the hosts ahead after 21 minutes.

There were positive moments from Saints and particularly Tella, who has seen himself pick up a string of starting positions in recent weeks.

“It’s disappointing,” he admitted. “We started the first 15 very well, probably had the upper hand.

“It was a sloppy goal to concede but they moved the ball well, they got a good team play to score a good goal. The second or third goal could have easily been prevented.

“It’s quite a frustrating one to look at. We’ve got to go back to the drawing board, see what went wrong today and take the positives from today into Wednesday.

“That has been the story of our season, creating chances and not scoring. One day they’ll go in and one day they won’t and obviously we’ve been quite unlucky this season with our chances. Another day all of those chances will go in."

“The whole [Arsenal] team, world-class players, they all knew what to do going into the game and we knew what we had to do to try and stop them. Some moments we did and some moments we didn’t and when we didn’t we got punished.

“Now we’ve got to look back on what went wrong and try and make amends going into Wednesday."

“All games are important. Now, more than ever, we need to react. We need to play games how we started the first 15, we’ve got to sustain that for 90 minutes. We’ve just got to keep going and hopefully things can change.

“If we keep doing the right things, I’m sure we’ll win a few games on the bounce.

“I’m enjoying it but it’s quite disappointing because we haven’t won yet. It’s frustrating because we know what we need to do to win and we’ve not been doing it so now we’ve just got to go back to the drawing board and make amends.”
