Stewart: Disappointing afternoon
Southampton goalscorer Ross Stewart was left feeling "ultimately disappointed" after his goal four minutes into his return to St Mary's wasn't enough to avoid defeat to Hull City.
Two first half strikes from Kyle Joseph and Charlie Hughes for the visitors decided the game, stretching Saints' winless run in the Sky Bet Championship to seven games.
"Disappointing to have another defeat," said the Scot. "It's a game we wanted to win being at home. I thought for large spells we were good but shot ourselves in the foot a bit with the two photos in the first half. Ryan [Manning] has held his hand up. Then it's a set piece.
"When you concede like that it hurts because you had such good momentum in the game. Yes it was nice to come on and pull one back but after that, if we're being critical, probably didn't cause them as many problems as we'd have liked. Disappointing afternoon. We had a good chat about it at the end there and hopefully bring a few things into Wednesday.
"There's a lot of unhappy people [in the dressing room], we know where we're at at the moment this season and it's nowhere near good enough. We can talk and we can try and put our finger on what's gone wrong, what needs to improve. But ultimately it's about putting in performances on the pitch and doing everything we can to win games.
"We've got to show that more and the good thing about the Championship is that games come thick and fast. We've got another home one on Wednesday and we've got to go out there and put out a better performance and ultimately get a win."
It was a first outing at St Mary's for Stewart in four months. He marked his return by halving the deficit four minutes after entering the field in the second half.
"I don't want it to sound like it's déjà vu for me but I've been here before and got another injury that kept me out for a long spell. It's nice to get back and score but I kind of expect that of myself. I want to play more games for this club than I've done. I want to help the lads more than I've done. It's nice to come back and score and have that feeling back again. But ultimately we've lost again and that's the overriding feeling."
