Southampton Football Club has launched an exciting new collaboration with upcycling innovators FC88 to repurpose surplus football shirt material into new fan merchandise, including bum bags and bucket hats now available in the club shop.

The club works hard to ensure that as much kit as possible is reused or redistributed wherever possible, but occasionally materials are left over that are not suitable for resale in their original form. Rather than allowing these items to go to waste, the club has partnered with FC88 to transform the fabric into two new products: bum bags and bucket hats.

FC88’s mission is to save football apparel from landfill and incinerators by reworking it into new pieces. Both products have been hand-crafted by a skilled team of craftspeople, with a careful design process ensuring that as much material as possible from the original shirts is reused in the final designs.

By giving these materials a second life, the club is supporting circular fashion and helping change the way we think about waste. Rather than viewing end-of-life products as disposable, circular fashion seeks to keep materials in use for as long as possible by extending product lifecycles or repurposing them into new items.

The initiative also forms part of Southampton FC’s wider sustainability strategy, The Halo Effect, which focuses on reducing waste, promoting circularity and encouraging more responsible production and consumption across the club’s operations. Projects such as this demonstrate how creative thinking and collaboration can reduce environmental impact while engaging supporters in more sustainable choices.

Jo Cain, Retail Lead for Southampton FC said:

“We’re always looking at ways to reduce waste and make better use of materials. While most kit is reused or redistributed, some remains that can’t be resold. Partnering with FC88 lets us give these materials a new purpose by turning them into bum bags and bucket hats. This keeps them in circulation longer, showcases circular fashion in football, and aligns with our wider sustainability goals.”

Please be aware that for this original run there are only 100 unique items available. There are limited items only available online, with other items available in-store only.
