Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of defender Derrick Abu on a permanent deal, following his departure from Chelsea.

The 19-year-old right-back arrives on the South Coast after nine years with the London club and has agreed a two-year deal to stay at Saints until 2025, initially joining Dave Horseman's Under-21s for the 2023/24 season.

The versatile young defender was part of the Chelsea side that won the Premier League U16 International Tournament in 2019, before going on to receive an England Under-17s call-up in 2020.

Last season, he broke into the Under-21s side that finished third in the top division of Premier League 2.

Abu expressed his delight after agreeing terms for the next chapter of his career.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be here, I can't wait to get started," he stated. "I've spoken to the players, managers and I'm so excited, I honestly can't wait."

"It was mainly the project [that attracted me] and the long-term vision of where the club's going to be.

"[I spoke to] the directors and what they saw and how I could benefit this club, it definitely took me straight away."
