Report: Spirited Saints defeat league leaders
Goals from Flynn Downes and Kuryu Matsuki ensured a statement Southampton win at league leaders Coventry City in the Sky Bet Championship.
Marking his 100th appearance for the club Flynn Downes tapped home to give Saints the lead on 48 minutes. Kuryu Matsuki's cross was glanced towards goal by Cyle Larin who could only hit the post, but following in was Downes for his second of the season.
Matsuki added Saints' second with five minutes of normal time to play, connecting with James Bree's corner from close range. Despite Coventry halving the lead from the penalty spot, the visitors held on with some resolute defending for a huge victory in the Midlands.
Tonda Eckert made three changes to the side which earnt a late draw at West Brom, two of those as a result of the injuries suffered by Leo Scienza and Ross Stewart. Cyle Larin netted a late equaliser on Wednesday night and came in for Stewart, with Caspar Jander and Cameron Bragg coming into midfield in place of Shea Charles and Scienza. Coventry made two changes from the team which hit Preston North End for three in midweek, top scorer Haji Wright and Joshua Eccles coming in for Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms.
It was an intriguing first half from the off, Saints grabbing the opening chance of the afternoon on 10 minutes. A deep corner finding Matsuki at the back post, who headed back into the path of Larin inside the six-yard box. The Canadian held off his defender before hitting a strike with his left foot just wide.
Larin’s opening signalled Saints’ early intent, pressing their league leading hosts and enjoying the lion’s share of possession inside 20 minutes. Very much the focal point as far as the visitors were concerned, Larin was sent through once more on 23 minutes by Jander. Unfortunately, his touch eluded him as he surged into the penalty area.
Corners continued to provide an opening for Saints, Taylor Harwood-Bellis looking to head a ball back where it came from but seeing the ball blocked ahead of the goal line. Coventry responded quickly with a counter attack, Milan van Ewijk using his pace to burst down the right before producing a low cross which Jander did well to put behind.
The hosts began to grow in confidence and create more chances. Minutes later a deep cross was met by Tatsuhiro Sakamoto at the far post who, with two goals in his last two games, could only find the side netting from a tight angle just past the half hour mark.
Coventry had another glorious chance soon after. Mason Clarke’s cross following a corner was met by Luke Woolfenden at the back post, who held off Jack Stephens but could only head wide from six-yards out. Saints responded as the half grew closer to the interval. Ryan Manning beating van Ewijk and entering the penalty area from the left wing, before putting in a low cross which failed to be met by anyone in black and red.
In keeping with the rhythm of the first half the hosts had another chance of themselves, Liam Kitching meeting a cross inside the penalty area and forcing a subline stop from Daniel Peretz to tip the ball past the far post.
As the first 45 came to a close Wright then had a glimpse of goal in first half stoppage time, but saw his left footed shot from just inside the penalty box glance just wide of the near post.
Into the second half Saints started with intent once again and this time got their reward. Matsuki sent in a superb in-swinging ball from the right which was turned goalwards by Larin. The Canadian's touch glanced off the post, where Downes was ready to tap into the net just three minutes into the second half.
Despite Coventry responding well to going behind Manning came inches away from doubling the visitor's lead. The Irishman, already enjoying his best goalscoring season to date, came close to his seventh of the campaign via another free-kick which drifted agonisingly wide of the top, right corner.
The pressure kept coming from the hosts but the chances kept coming for Saints, Jander beating the offside trap and firing towards goal from a tight angle, played through brilliantly by Finn Azaz, but could only hit his effort straight at Carl Rushworth. Peretz was then called into action after van Ewijk used his pace once more. He produced a cross which was met by Wright inside the box, his header claimed by the Saints keeper.
Jander found space in behind once again soon after his earlier opening, this time Rushworth stormed 50-yards out of his goal and nicked the ball off the German with 65 minutes on the clock. Both managers then made changes, with Charles and Cameron Archer being introduced for Saints.
The game had certainly turned into a battle at the CBS Arena, with the visitors dealing with the Coventry pressure well and continuing to carve openings of their own. With 15 minutes to play Jander and Archer combined to break into the Coventry box, cutting the ball back intended for Azaz but cut out, the ball falling to Matsuki who fit a first time shot just wide.
Despite continued possession from the hosts Eckert's side did brilliantly to quieten the crowd and quell any attacks coming their way, before adding a second via a clever corner routine. James Bree's ball into the box fell all the way to the feet of Matsuki inside the six-yard box, who tapped into an open net from close range.
With victory in their sights Coventry were handed a lifeline two minutes into seven added on. Charles's challenge was deemed to be reckless inside the box, giving substitute Torp the chance to halve Saints' lead. The striker converting from 12 yards.
What followed in the remaining five minutes was a series of resolute defensive acts from the visitors, who were more than warranted of their vital three points once that final whistle blew.
