Southampton defender James Bree reflected with honesty as his side were defeated by League One Gillingham in the Carabao Cup

The hosts stormed into a 1-0 lead at Priestfield Stadium, as Ashley Nadesan tapped home from close range on eight minutes.

Robbie McKenzie's second half brace then put the game beyond all doubt, Charly Alcaraz adding only a late consolation.

Bree collected his first competitive minutes of the season in Kent, but acknowledged that was no excuse for the end result.

"It’s not good enough from any of us really," he reflected. "We didn’t implement the system. There are a few lads in there, including me, who’ve had their first 90 minutes of the season so we’re still a bit rusty, but that’s no excuse.

"We’re a Premier League team, really, against League Two opposition, no disrespect to them, a result like that shouldn’t happen especially the way it did. They were the better team at the end of the day, so it’s just disappointing.

"You know when you play in the cup that it’s going to be competitive. Yes they’re in League Two but there’s still good players, there’s good players in the divisions.

"They wanted it more than us tonight and I think that showed. They were getting to first, second balls, winning headers. Two set plays they scored from which is annoying for us because that’s a big thing for us this year and it’s another two we’ve conceded from Obviously, it’s very disappointing but you move on now."
